FAQ

GENERAL - FAQ

  • What is the difference between recreational sports and AAU sports?

    Recreational Sports

    • Usually features an open registration and combines all skill levels.

    • Players are guaranteed playing opportunity, no matter the player’s skill level.

    • Less expensive than club.

    • Less competitive than club.

    AAU Sports

    • Also referred to as, travel or club.

    • Requires individual tryouts to be enrolled on a team.

    • Players are usually selected based on their playing ability and other factors.

    • Playing time is usually based on production, experience, and commitment.

    • League/tournament rules usually mirror High School or NCAA rules.

    • Much bigger commitment than recreational.

    • Usually more experienced coaches.

    • Competitiveness is highly emphasized.

LA Select is an AAU program.

  • Do you have any programs for beginners?

Yes, we have four beginner/intermediate options:

Jr Hoops League - Youth basketball league dedicated to providing beginner to intermediate players with a supportive and inclusive environment to learn and enjoy the game. For more information, visit: jrhoops.org

Camps - We host two camps annually (winter/summer) available for all skill levels. For more information, visit: HERE

Clinics - Weekly group training sessions available for all skill levels. For more information, visit: HERE

Training - 1-on-1 or small group private training sessions with our highly qualified trainers. For more information, visit: HERE

  • Does LA Select have an off-season?

Yes, we have a brief off season around mid-August to mid-September. We’re a year-round program.

  • How many players are on each team?

We usually have 7-8 on each roster. We don’t take more than 8 to tournaments.

Any additional player added only attends practices. These players compete at practices to earn a spot on the game roster.

TRYOUT - FAQ

  • Are all the teams tryout based?

Yes. As we do not enjoy rejecting players through our tryout process, it is necessary that we do this to preserve our competitiveness. With that being said, we do offer other programs meant for beginner/intermediate level players. These programs include: Jr Hoops League, Camps, Clinics, and Training.

  • How often do you hold tryouts for your club teams?

Youth Teams - We hold two open tryouts per season in September & January.
High School Teams - We hold 1-2 open tryouts in February/March.

We offer tryouts by appointment on a weekly basis mid-season as well. If you’re interested in registering for a tryout, visit HERE

  • How much does it cost to tryout?

    Tryouts are completely free.

  • Do players need to tryout every year?

Yes, we require all our members to tryout every year regardless of if they made the team the previous season.

  • Can I refer players to join?

Of course! All tryout referrals can be directed to our tryout registration link: laselect.com/tryout

  • When can I tryout again?

We require a 6 month window between tryouts.

PRACTICES - FAQ

  • How often do the teams practice?

2 practices per week (1.0-1.5 hours per)

  • What days are the team practices held?

    Mondays-Thursdays. Usually Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays

  • Where do the teams practice?

Pacific Community Center - 501 S Pacific Ave, Glendale, CA 91204

  • What if we can’t make it to a practice?

Coming to practice is extremely important to us because we believe each missed practice is a big step backwards. Coaches take attendance at each practice. If something does come up and you do need to miss practice please text/email the head coach.
